Over the course of my wellness journey, incorporating a daily morning ritual has been one of the most influential behavior changes on my mental health and the overall direction of my life. The phrase "You start your day versus the day starting you" really stuck with me. During particularly stressful times in my life, morning ritual has been a lifeline.
In that vein, initially it was a tactic to help me organize my thoughts, reduce my anxiety, and improve my mood. Eventually over practice and time, it became more of a spiritual and grounding way to connect with mySelf.
Morning rituals improve mental health by reducing stress and increasing focus. Structured routines help stabilize morning cortisol awakening response, reducing overall anxiety. Morning habits lower cognitive load and reduce daily decision fatigue. Behavioral science shows automatic routines free up mental energy for complex tasks later in the day.
Starting the day with intentional calm primes the brain for emotional regulation. Some morning practices like journaling or light exercise release dopamine and serotonin, boosting mood endurance.
Examples of morning routine:
Journaling - it can literally just be one word of what you want to embody for the day (ie EASE or FLOW)
A designated quiet 5-10 minutes drinking coffee or tea
Reading inspiring text
Light stretches or one-held posture
A mindful walk or jog
Emotional freedom technique (especially if stressed)
Because life can be really busy, let it be simple and short and/or creative.
5 minutes of drinking your coffee and writing down a word has an impact.
Walking the dog or making your child breakfast can be a mindful exercise.
